West Nile virus

The West Nile virus is caused by the West Nile virus.

This virus can give you fever, headache, body aches, skin rash and swollen lymph glands. This virus causes in some cases death and in other cases major illnesses, and in a few cases minor illness.
This year (2012) it appears there is an increase in the number of cases being reported. According to the CDC there have been approximately 1100 cases reported to date. In 2011 there were approximately 700 cases reported and in 2010 about 1000 cases of West Nile Virus were reported.

The West Nile virus has pretty much spread through the whole United States.
There is no treatment now for the West Nile virus. The West Nile virus is spread through blood transfusion which is why most people get it from mosquitoes.

1918 flu

In the 1918 flu video I learned that the flu comes from birds. I learned that the h1n1 virus in 1918 was the deadliest flu recorded, it killed more people than world war 1. The scientist wanted to find out if it was possible to mix the avian virus with the h1n1 virus to see if it was possible to make the avian virus able to move from person to person.

In my opinion, it was to risky for him to try this. It's good to have gained this knowledge but the risk of accidently doing something and possibly starting another pandemic from it is to risky. I did think however, it was a very interesting experiment.

Tropisms

A tropism is growth in response
A negative tropism is when something is turned away from something else and positive is when it's turned toward something else. For example if a plant grows toward the light it has, negative geotropism and positive phototropism.

Auxin is a hormone that increases the speed of growth
Cytokinins are responsible for cell division or cytokinesis
Gibberellins regulate the growth and influence germination
Ethylene gas is used to force the ripening of fruit.


Phototropism - Tropos means to turn to or away from and photo means light. Therefore photo tropism means to turn towards or away from light

Geotropism- two means earth or ground. Therefore geotropism means to turn towards or away from the ground.

Thigmotropism- thigmotropism means touch, therefore thigmotropism Means to turn towards or away from touch.

Hydrotropism- hydro means water. Therefore hydrotropism means to turn towards or away from touch.


Chemotropism- chemo means chemical therefore chemotropism means to turn towards or away from chemicals.

1. During the Protista lab I became so fascinated with micro organisms and single cell organisms. I feel like there is this whole new world that I never knew was there! I saw cyclops 's and bomina's  and others. Everything in there was so interesting.

 
this is a cyclops. it was really hard to get a picture of it because it moved so quickly but it was probably my favorite over all of them.


im not really sure what this is called. but it was fun to watch it swim. it kind of reminds me of a crab


this is a rotifer. it kind of looks like a jelly fish to me. it just sat there while i watched it. on the right where it looks like tentacles, those things were spinning almost like propellers.

and thats what i saw and learned during the lab.

These organisms are basically have plant half animal. They can make their own food but can also eat other things. They can move around and swim. Scientist argued about which kingdom to put it in, and it's still not classified as a plant or an animal.

The earliest forms of humans look a lot more like apes, they're hairier, and have a rougher skin. But their facial structure and eyes are similar to a humans.


The second earliest start to look anti more like chimps, but now it's eyes look very similar to a humans.


The third earliest, has a facial structure more similar to a humans, it's lips and nose are starting to form like a humans.


The ones most similar to us look a lot like humans. The only difference I can think of is the width of their face.

Natural selection

Basically I've learned That natural selection is nature selecting which species should survive and which species shouldn't.

Artificial Selection is when man controls the animal for farming, ranching, ect. They breed and control what is wanted for a specific trait. For example, removing a calf from the group for a condition that limits their weight gain.

Natural Selection is when environmental Conditions determine which combination of alleles (genotypes) will survive and reproduce.

For natural selection to occur:
1. Variation in a population must exist
2. Variation results in differences in offspring survival
3. Variation is due to inheritance

This article talks about making stem cells and creating organs. It's amazing how they can do this. This means, that people having to wait for an organ transplant won't have to wait very long! This is awesome! It's so interesting to see how this is possible!
